Four Fold Hurricane Exhibition Features Artwork by Ronnie Landfield & Ronald Davis

The Sam and Adele Golden Gallery, 188 Bell Road, New Berlin, NY 13411

January 19, 2024 – March 8, 2024

Four Fold Hurricane is a two-person exhibition currently on view at the Sam and Adele Golden Gallery at Golden Artist Colors, 188 Bell Road, New Berlin, NY, until Friday, March 8, 2024.  Four Fold Hurricane is an exhibition of paintings by artists Ronald Davis and Ronnie Landfield, who have been friends since the 1960s.

Both Davis and Landfield are abstract artists with a long history of displaying their works both in one-person and group exhibitions.  Davis had his first one-person show at the Nicholas Wilder Gallery in Los Angeles in 1965, and Landfield had his first one-person show at the David Whitney Gallery in New York City in 1969.  Davis and Landfield first exhibited together at the 1967 Whitney Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Painting, where their works were shown alongside the works of more than 160 other painters.

Landfield is a born and raised New Yorker, while Davis was born in California, raised in Wyoming, and lived in and around Los Angeles until 1991 when he moved outside of Taos, New Mexico.

Over the decades of his painting career, Landfield’s signature style has involved contrasted areas of paint-infused canvas with opaque geometric bands.  An example of this technique can be seen in Landfield’s “Hurricane,” a 76 inches tall and 126 inches wide piece that was created in 2004.  One of five Landfield pieces in the exhibition, “Hurricane” features a series of acrylic color blocks poised between an atmospheric upper-section and a geometric band on the bottom.

One work that exemplifies the combinations of perspective and the solidity of color that Davis has investigated since the 1960s is Davis’s “Four Fold.”  Made in 1969, “Four Fold” is a four-section piece created by pouring colored polyester resins into pre-constructed molds and backing them with fiberglass panels. In total, this work is 74 inches tall and 256 inches wide.
